Lesson title = Atrophy
This is lesson 17 of 18 in this module
Atrophy
A secondary morphology
Definition:
Thinning of a structure within the skin
Generally appears wrinkled and shiny when the atrophy is at the level of the epidermis
Can also result in depression in the skin when the atrophy is at the level of the dermis or subcuticular tissue
General Explanation for Atrophy:
There can be “epidermal atrophy”—thinning of the epidermis (seen often with the use of topical corticosteroids or prolonged oral steroid use)
There can be “dermal atrophy”—thinning of the dermis
Examples:
Striae = affectionately known as stretch marks
Poikiloderma = used as a description for skin that has atrophy, telangiectasias, and hypo/hyper-pigmentation; most often caused by sun damage
